Health and Safety Executive warning on gas cookers
The Health and Safety Executive would like to draw students attention to a problem concerning a number of gas cookers in circulation throughout the UK and Ireland. There are over 20 gas cooker models which have been identified as a danger when used incorrectly. There have been a number of deaths occurred in recent months as a direct result of Carbon Monoxide poisoning from these appliances. When used according to the manufacturer’s instructions and under normal operating conditions the appliances are safe. Using the grill on specified makes and models of Beko, Belling, Flavel, Leisure and New World cookers, with the grill door closed, can produce extremely dangerous levels of carbon monoxide, which can cause serious injury or death. These cookers, like all gas appliances should be used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Please make sure that when using the grill on these appliances that the grill door remains in the open position when in use.
If you come across one of these appliances please contact the appliance manufacturer or alternatively Belfast City Council on 02890 270428.
On contacting the manufacturer they will send out an engineer who will then modify the appliance and leave it in a safe working order. There will be no charge for this service.
